$25

A long time performer at both The Barns and Filene Center, this veteran rocker returns with his newest release, Blood from Stars, which the Washington Examiner called “exhilarating.” Henry is best known for his early ’90s country-influenced albums, Kindness of the World and Short Man’s Room, both of which feature members of the country-rock band, the Jayhawks . Throughout his career, Henry has experimented with and subsequently mastered a variety of diverse genres, enabling him to collaborate with some of the most celebrated names in music, including Elvis Costello, Madonna, Ornette Coleman, Allen Toussaint, and Solomon Burke. He is highly regarded by many other musicians, particularly for his evolving sound, thoughtful lyrics, and excellent production skills.

Habib Koité and Bamada

Wednesday, March 10, 2010 at 8 p.m.

$25

Internationally known, Habib Koité and his supporting cast, Bamada, are pure West African talent. Rarely in the United States, after five years Habib Koit é and Bamada revisit The Barns to perform selections from their dramatic new album, Afriki, which has sold more than 250,000 albums worldwide. Koit é resisted altering his music for Western listeners to keep the style grounded in the regional sounds of Mali. Signature instruments range from the guitar and violin, to the harmonica and hand clapping, to Kélétigui Diabaté ’s authentic West African balafon. Boasting an appearance on the popular television show Late Night with David Letterman, a duet with Bonnie Raitt on her 2002 album Silver Lining, and almost a thousand concerts on some of the world’s most prominent stages, Habib Koité is one of Africa’s most famous and adored musicians.

Anat Cohen Quartet

Clarinetwork

Thursday, March 11, 2010 at 8 p.m.

$24

An alumnus of the Berklee College of Music, Anat Cohen is a rising jazz composer, an established bandleader, and, according to The Washington Post, “one of the most original young instrumentalists in jazz.” Arriving for her Barns debut as part of the Anat Cohen Quartet, her forthcoming Clarinetwork program celebrates the music of the legendary Benny Goodman. Recently named Clarinetist of the Year two years running by the Jazz Journalists Association, her many accomplishments have been rewarded with a slew of additional accolades featuring prominent placement on many year-end best-of lists from The New York Sun, Slate and JazzTimes. Hailed by the New York Times as “well prepared, passionately literate in music far outside her local circle, and an improviser with gusto,” her Barns performance will hopefully echo these sentiments.

Greg Brown w/ Special Guest Jason Wilber

Friday, March 12, 2010 at 8 p.m.

$30

Greg Brown

An astounding 28 albums under his belt, Greg Brown arrives at The Barns to share his reflective, contemporary guitar-heavy folk music about life’s various shortcomings and successes. Greg’s new collection, Dream City: Essential Recordings Vol 2, 1997-2006, features fan favorites from his last six studio albums, most notably “Blue Car” from Covenant and “Your Town Now” from In The Hills of California. Brown's songwriting has been admired by many, and his songs have been performed by the likes of Willie Nelson, Carlos Santana, Michael Johnson, Shawn Colvin, and Mary Chapin Carpenter.

Jason Wilber

The easygoing, soothing melodies of Jason Wilber’s show will warm the stage for Greg Brown. Offering  a unique combination of rock-a-billy and folk-pop along the lines of Lyle Lovett or Townes Van Zandt, Wilber is enjoying a string of opening dates for Brown prior to stepping on stage as his lead guitarist. His latest album, Ghost of Summers Past (2008), is a combination of old and new songs, offering a unique glimpse into the growth of this constantly evolving artist. He has collaborated with some of the best musicians in the business, including John Prine, whose 2006 Grammy Award-winning album Fair & Square featured Brown on lead guitar. He currently hosts a weekly radio program, In Search of a Song with Jason Wilber.
