Willy Porter w/ Special Guest Luke Doucet

Thursday, November 5, 2009 at 8 p.m.

$20

Willy Porter

Last here in 2006, Willy Porter, who was recently proclaimed a “guitar wizard” by Paste Magazine, arrives in support of his June release, How to Rob a Bank. Loved for his lyrical wit, rhythmic, energetic guitar melodies, and soulful low-register vocals, Porter has often earned comparisons to acoustic greats Elliot Smith and Dave Matthews. With a background in improv comedy, Porter’s live performances sometimes include spur-of-the-moment songwriting, crafting hilarious impromptu songs based on collective audience suggestions. Porter has toured with national acts including the Cranberries, Rickie Lee Jones, and Tori Amos, the latter raving “Willy plays rhythms that make me want to crawl inside his guitar and sleep there forever.”

Luke Doucet

With a resume and a sound likened to Willy Porter, Luke Doucet arrives at The Barns as the headliners special guest. A Canadian born singer/songwriter, Doucet is best known for his session work with Sarah McLachlan, both in the studio, and live, and as front man for the Vancouver-based band Veal which achieved moderate success in the late ’90s. His sound has been termed as “Canadiana”, which is described as Americana’s northern folk-rock cousin. Doucet’s latest release, 2008’s Blood’s Too Rich, shows the artist’s progression into folk and blues, resulting in poignant tunes that traverse borders and genres alike.

Chad & Jeremy

Friday, November 6, 2009 at 8 p.m.

$25

Returning to The Barns for the fourth consecutive year, British pop icons Chad & Jeremy continue to tour after the October release 2008 release of ARK-eology, featuring newly recorded versions of all their greatest hits from the 1960s to today. With a mix of original arrangements and new adaptations, the album compiles the duo’s 18 most popular recordings. In addition to the new record release and consistent touring after their 2004 reunion, the duo plans to release a three-year-in-the-making documentary titled Yesterday’s Back: The Chad & Jeremy Story. The film offers an intimate look at the lives and careers of both from their humble beginnings to present day. A nationwide DVD release is planned after its 2010 PBS debut.

Janis Ian

Saturday, November 7, 2009 at 7:30 p.m.

$25

Returning for her third performance at The Barns throughout a 40-plus-year career, Janis Ian’s live show offers the same dynamism, courage, and passion as when she burst onto the scene in 1967 at the age of 15. This Grammy Award-winning singer/songwriter rose to fame after an appearance on Leonard Bernstein’s, Inside Pop: The Rock Revolution, which introduced the masses to her controversial and culturally charged single “Society’s Child (Baby I’ve Been Thinking),” a song about an interracial couple. After a brief hiatus from the industry in the late ’70s, she returned to her songwriting roots in 1992 with a new repertoire of songs characterized by her signature defiance of social, political, and cultural stigmas. She continues to deliver important messages through her message, inspiring and captivating her fans to re-examine the ways of the world.
